About the music
Franz Schubert, Stabat Mater
- Schubert set the Stabat Mater twice, at 18 and 19: a short Latin setting in G minor (1815) and a larger one in F minor (1816).
- The F minor work, D 383, sets a German paraphrase by Friedrich Klopstock, “Jesus Christus schwebt am Kreuze”, for soloists, choir and orchestra, in twelve movements.
- The Stabat Mater itself is a 13th-century poem on Mary standing at the cross, set by composers from Palestrina to Dvořák.
